Finding Relief from Acid Reflux with Manuka Honey: Ray's Story

The rise of acid reflux

Those who have overindulged in fatty and acidic foods know the discomfort of acid reflux all too well. The symptoms are unmistakable — heartburn, chest pain, burping, and nausea — but for some people, acid reflux, also known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can take its toll on their physical and emotional well-being.

A recent study by Yale Medicine estimated approximately 20% of people in the US have acid reflux. Acid reflux is a stomach disorder that occurs when stomach contents — gastric secretions with or without food — regurgitate into the oesophagus and cause discomfort. When you eat, a ring of muscle fibres in the lower oesophagus prevents swallowed food from moving back up. If this ring of muscle is loose or doesn't close all the way, stomach contents can leak back into the oesophagus, causing acid reflux. Some people manage their symptoms with minor lifestyle changes, while others may need over-the-counter medications, lifelong treatment, and in more serious cases, surgery.

It's worth understanding, too, that the digestive system is a complex environment, and much of the interest in natural approaches like Manuka honey comes from its broader reputation for supporting the gut and immune system generally, rather than from research targeted specifically at reflux. For instance, some laboratory work has looked at how compounds in Manuka honey interact with immune cells in the digestive tract: cell-culture experiments indicate that methylglyoxal (MGO) from Manuka honey can enhance activation of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells in vitro, a mechanism proposed to support immune-microbial sensing. This is laboratory-based mechanistic evidence only, using isolated immune cells rather than a clinical study, and it has not been examined in people with acid reflux, GERD, or gastritis — so it should be understood strictly as a plausible biological mechanism rather than a demonstrated clinical effect.

It all started with heartburn. At first, the discomfort was minimal, but as the weeks and months went by, my heartburn had morphed into chronic acid reflux. Everything I ate started coming back into the oesophagus; I had to have an endless supply of tissues to hand to wipe away the rejected food that would come back into my mouth. But sometimes the tissues weren't enough. I had to go to the bathroom or duck behind a car to get out what I'd just eaten. I'd swallow my medications like sweets to get it under control, but it was never enough. I've had a few embarrassing moments over the years, but the one that stands out was at a friend's birthday party a couple of years ago. I was having some stomach discomfort and I didn't quite understand how much food was coming back up. I tried using a couple of tissues to blot up the excess food, but I ended up vomiting it all into my hand in front of a room full of people. I was so embarrassed. Over time, I realised that certain foods and drinks were making my acid reflux worse, and inevitably, I gave up the foods I loved to try to keep it under control.

My leap into the dark

I have always been sceptical, and naturally I was cautious when I heard that Manuka honey might potentially help ease the symptoms of serious conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux. I had read reviews of others who said they had seen significant health improvements, such as the eradication of Helicobacter pylori, which I found hard to believe. It gave me hope that Manuka honey could help me. My symptoms were really starting to take a toll on my physical and emotional well-being.

Looking back, I understand now that some of what I read online was more anecdotal than scientifically settled, and I think that's worth being upfront about. Manuka honey's antibacterial reputation is real in the laboratory: chemistry research has identified methylglyoxal as the dominant antibacterial compound in New Zealand Manuka honey, with measurable inhibitory effects against bacteria like E. coli and S. aureus in agar-diffusion assays. However, this is chemical and in-vitro evidence only — the same honey samples were not tested against Helicobacter pylori specifically, so claims that Manuka honey could "eradicate H. pylori" go beyond what this research actually shows. I didn't know that at the time, but it's a distinction I think is important to share now.

I finally gave in and decided to take a leap. I searched for authentic Manuka honey from New Zealand and chose a high-grade UMF™ 24+ | MGO 1122+, and the rest is history. I started taking one teaspoon in the morning on an empty stomach and one teaspoon at night before bed. As time went on, I reduced my medications and increased my Manuka honey intake, and things started to change. I'd now strongly encourage anyone doing the same to loop in their doctor throughout that process. It took a few months and a good amount of perseverance, but it worked for me.

It's also fair to say that the clinical research on Manuka honey and digestion generally is still thin. The only human clinical trial that has specifically tested oral Manuka honey consumption in relation to digestive health was a small randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial in 20 healthy adults (aged 42–64), who consumed UMF™ 20+ Manuka honey daily for four weeks. It found the honey safe — no change in allergy markers or glycation end-products — but observed no beneficial shift in gut bacterial populations, despite anecdotal claims about digestive benefits. Importantly, this trial didn't include anyone with GERD, gastritis, or acid reflux, and it didn't measure oesophageal or gastric outcomes at all, so it can't confirm or rule out an effect on reflux symptoms specifically. I share this not to undercut my own experience, but because I think it's important for anyone reading this to know what the science does and doesn't currently say.

A truly special honey

The first thing that struck me was its unmistakable taste, sweet and caramelised with a bitter aftertaste, one of the best flavours I have ever tried. As I continued with my Manuka honey routine, I found my acid reflux gradually settled. Today I no longer rely on anti-gastric medications, and the reflux has almost completely disappeared. I can eat and drink freely and enjoy social gatherings without fear. The constant fear of making a fool of myself had been affecting my social life. It prevented me from enjoying the moments and people I loved; now I no longer worry. I take a high-grade UMF™ 24+ in the morning and evening, sometimes another teaspoon around the middle of the day because it is simply that good.

On the note of dosage and "the right amount" — I've since learned that more MGO isn't automatically better in every context. Methylglyoxal, the very compound prized for Manuka honey's antibacterial strength, is also a protein-glycating agent that has been associated with impaired wound healing in diabetic models in mechanistic research, and researchers in this space have explicitly called for more randomised controlled trials to establish safety in vulnerable populations. This is a theoretical caution drawn mainly from wound-healing research rather than a study of oral consumption or digestive tissue specifically, but it's a good reminder that "higher grade" doesn't automatically mean "higher benefit with no downside" — particularly for anyone managing diabetes or blood sugar conditions, who should really discuss regular honey consumption with a clinician first.

The best honey in the world

If you are struggling with acid reflux, read the scientific evidence online and reviews from those who have used Manuka honey to try to ease their symptoms. This isn't just bar talk; Manuka honey may make a difference for some people, alongside proper medical guidance. If there's anything I could say, it's just give it a try, with realistic expectations and your own doctor in the loop. I didn't believe it at first either, but here I am. I'm relieved that my acid reflux is under control; the mental relief is hard to put into words. I don't need to worry about being uncomfortable in public; I'm enjoying life again. I've also used Manuka honey to soothe cold and sore throat symptoms, and it really works for me.

Interestingly, there is at least some early clinical evidence — separate from reflux — that speaks to Manuka honey's relevance to the mouth and throat. A pilot study of 30 volunteers found that chewing a Manuka honey "leather" (UMF™ 15) three times daily for 21 days significantly reduced plaque scores and gingival bleeding compared with sugar-free gum. This is preliminary clinical evidence relating to oral and gum tissue exposure to honey, not to oesophageal reflux or stomach acidity, so while it may plausibly support the sore-throat-related relief I've noticed, it shouldn't be read as evidence for acid reflux or GERD improvement specifically. I will continue to use Manuka honey as part of my own routine for the foreseeable future, as it does me both physically and psychologically good.

That review doesn't evaluate acid reflux, GERD, or gastritis specifically, and its cautious tone is a useful reminder that general bioactivity in a lab doesn't automatically translate into a confirmed clinical benefit for any single condition, reflux included.
