What we collect

Analytics — and your choice

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which articles people read and how they arrive, and it only runs if you accept it. Until you do, the script is never loaded and no analytics cookie is set. Declining costs you nothing — the site works identically either way.

If you accept, it collects your approximate location, device and browser type, the pages you view, and the site you came from. We use it in aggregate: we are looking at which primers get read, not at individuals. Google processes this data as our analytics provider and under its own terms.

You can also opt out with Google’s browser add-on, or by blocking cookies in your browser.

Newsletter

If you subscribe, we store your email address so we can send you the newsletter. Nothing else is required and nothing else is stored. The list is held by Resend, our email provider.

Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe here at any time. Unsubscribing removes you from the list. We do not sell, rent or share the list.

Cookies we set ourselves

One, and only for staff: a preference cookie that bypasses the regional redirect on this site. It contains no personal information. Signed-in administrators also carry a session cookie, which is not applicable to readers.

Your analytics choice above is remembered in your browser’s local storage rather than in a cookie, so that recording a refusal doesn’t itself require setting one. Clearing your browser data resets it and you will be asked again.

What we don’t do

• No advertising or retargeting trackers.
• No selling or renting of personal data, ever.
• No accounts, and no profiles built about you.
• No health information collected. The grade quiz runs entirely in your browser — your answers are not sent to us or stored.

Where the site runs

The site is hosted by Vercel and its content database is hosted by Supabase. Both may process technical request data such as IP addresses as part of serving pages and keeping the service secure. Data may be processed outside New Zealand.

Your rights

You can ask what personal data we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. In practice, for almost every reader the answer is “an email address, if you subscribed” — and unsubscribing removes it. For anything else, contact us via the contact page.

Changes

If this policy changes materially we will update the date at the foot of this page. Continued use of the site after a change means the updated policy applies.
